Larry was born in Detroit, but grew up in the suburb of St. Clair Shores. After graduating from high school he enrolled at the University of Michigan acquiring a BS degree in natural resource planning and conservation. Immediately after graduation, he went to Newport, Rhode Island where he completed his naval officer candidate school training and was commissioned an ensign in the U. S. Navy. He is a Vietnam veteran, serving on active duty until November 1975. Although he returned to civilian life, Larry maintained affiliation with the Naval Reserve, attaining the rank of lieutenant commander (O4) and ultimately retiring from the service on December 1, 1994.
After leaving active duty, Larry moved to Indian River taking a position in forestry with the Department of Natural Resources. That is where he met his soon-to-be bride, Patricia McClutchey. Taking an 18-month leave of absence from the DNR to acquire a BS degree in forest management from Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Larry returned to Indian River, marrying Patricia in 1979. Larry and Patty continue to reside in Indian River.
Over the years, Larry has owned a private forestry consulting business, served as executive direction of the Michigan Forest Association, held employment with the rural electric company as the right-of-way maintenance supervisor, and served as environmental affairs coordinator for Domino’s Pizza Distribution Corporation. Later he held licenses in life insurance, health insurance and securities, as an agent representing New York Life. Patty is retired from her teaching career of 30 years. They have two sons and one daughter, along with 8 grandchildren . . . all of whom reside in Michigan.
For recreation, Larry is an avid fly fisherman pursuing brown trout and steelhead throughout Michigan. He pursues whitetail deer each fall with crossbow and firearm. After the passing of his German shorthaired pointer, Babe, Larry tromps the aspen thickets with his memories rather than his boots.
Larry is an active member of the Cheboygan County Republican Party, appointed as chairman of the election integrity sub-committee.
